The Revenant

The Revenant (2016)

Cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki

Alejandro G. Inarritu's Birdman (2014) is undeniable, one of the most enthralling story driven film with a bits of it's fantastic visuals through a magical film-making technique, that makes the whole film felt it was shot continuously without any cuts, and with all honesty, it was the only film I've seen that was made by Alejandro G. Inarrtu. However,  sometimes, one film from a filmmaker is enough to give the director's love, and my interest about Alejandro starts to grow and grow.

The film follows the story of revenge and redemption of  Hugh Glass (Leornardo Di Caprio). His Survival through a dark and fragile forest after a vicious attack that led his life into the most darkest time of life. With faith and a will to avenge his lost against those men who left him to the death in the middle of freezing forest, Hugh Glass must now fight through the wildernes.

The Revenant is probably one of the looking film I've seen this year, combine it with wonderful performances coming from Leonardo Di Caprio, who now won his first academy award after 6 nominations. Tom Hardy is also fantastic, although i can't deny the fact that I'm having a trouble mostly through his dialogue, or it just maybe because I am foreigner.

Emmanuel "Chivo" Lubezki  once again showcases his magic as a Cinematographer. I've some of his work and never in my film experience i said  Chivo failed me. The Revenant is one of his greatest artwork. With the use of natural lightning, and fantastic camera angles there is moment in the film where i ask myself "How that he do that", Chivo is like a painter with the hands of a magician. Every time he took shots for his film its always a Artistically Magical experience.

Overall The Revenant is a solid film from a solid filmmakers. Alejandro Inarritu, Chivo and Di Caprio is a great combination to make a simple Revenge story into a dynamic and beautiful looking film. The incredible cinematography makes it worth a while to watch, and every single frame has a it own beauty.  The Long takes which where Inarritu was also known for are totally perfect mix to the surreal style of Chivo's Cinematography.

The Revenant, although when it comes to story and plot is not that superior, is a kind of film i would love to watch over and over again, just by its truly enthralling visuals.
