The Last Jedi: How to tell a Saga

Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (2017)

Petitions rises to remove Rian Johnson's take on Star Wars Universe which is The Last Jedi on canon is reasonable for the fans who have high expectation or more like prediction on the saga that never went true. After J.J Abram's the force awakens, people's expectation for the Episode 8 has already been set. There was the questions that the previous episode never answered and also there's the characters that needed fleshed off. If you have that expectations, you'll probably get disappointed with The Last Jedi, because all of the things we thought we will see in the movie never happened, and to the whole canon saga, Rian Johnson just despise it and Disney never did anything about it, or did they ?

Saying that Star Wars The Last Jedi is a shame and an outsider in Star Wars Universe is understandable. As Rian never exceeded audience expectation or not even doing a single one of those is such a pain. Like Rey's  parentage, Snoke's Identity, or Luke's attitude towards the film is the obvious questions that the fans supposed to get in the middle of the new trilogy, in fact the pressure of being in the middle of the trilogy had something to do with it because the original trilogy had their "Empire Strikes Back" leaving the audience subconsciously expect that Episode VIII will be far as great as the episode V.

Here's what I noticed watching the whole saga continuously. It's continuous, it's not repetitive, every single film in the saga tries to be different. Other Star Wars films had their very "Last Jedi" moments from them, Leia Kisses Luke ? Ended being a brother in Episode 6 ? Ewoks ? Jar Jar binks ? but the truth is we are not talking about the mistakes here, we are talking about how it was different from time to time, and The  Last Jedi is never outsider or a different take but its more vulgar, and i think the last Jedi message is pretty clear... The Star Wars Universe is unpredictable.

In fact The Last Jedi is one of the reason why i can relate more to this universe because just like ours in reality, everything could happen. Little by we know Star Wars actually always do what people does't expect since the very beginning. Obi-Wan's Death for example in the new hope or Darth Vader's "I am your father" and more, The Last Jedi just do it more often and I don't think there is something wrong with it. Last Jedi is not a perfect film, but to out-categorize it as part of canon is not accepting the changes, there are no even changes  but progression. And its understandable that Progression is hard to acceptance sometimes because of the unpredictability that it may provide in the future.

Star Wars is no exception, It may still be story with structure, but in story- things we never thought could happen, can happen, until that story ends. And Star Wars saga is a continuous story that hasn't find its ending, it may have separate movies, books or animated series but its telling a story, so anything could happen for a reason. And even in the legends before it was applied, who knew that Luke could become Palpatine's clone apprentice ? and so on. The death of Snoke is not because he doesn't matter but his death is to make a progression, but will always leave a room for his story, and Luke Skywalker's character in the film is also a great representation of the Story that progress. The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi was years and years apart from  the film it was originally picked up, but The Last Jedi shows that there was a story that is happening even if we don't have a film right away after the return of the Jedi to tell that, and we cannot longer cling to Legends.

Removing The Last Jedi in canon just make an irony. It will be the very thing that fans rave about the movie, the changes. Which Rian Johnson I believe never mean't to do, and there is no changes like I said, It's just a continuation of the story that happened. The real problem is we never let go of anticipation that we already get from the previous movie, Just like what Kylo Ren said in the movie "Let Go" that's exactly what Rian Johnson is trying tell us, not to let go of Luke Skywalker or other old characters or moments we love in the Star Wars but to let go where this story will go on.

And that's why I think The Last Jedi is a love a letter for the true fans of Star Wars or more like a signage that says that not all the things we thought we knew will always prevail in this saga, or it never really at all. So i must say, I respect the hate on this film, but at the same time its Ironic. Star Wars is great at setting expectation and The Last Jedi is a big obvious film to do that. The only things that it may differ to other Star Wars movies is that it showed things we never really saw yet at anywhere in this universe and I thought it was amazing.

In the end of the day despite of all the character changes, Luke Skywalker still saves day just like what the fans have wanted to or even Luke himself "Standing in the front of the First Order wielding a laser sword". And the fans is never in control on where the story will go or even Rian Johnson himself. Star Wars is genius discovery to be honest, it has a life on its own, It's a universe that felt almost real that if you tell about New Hope to someone that never heard of it, may think Death Star Existed. Star Wars Episode VIII The Last Jedi is a masterful representation of story telling and the progression of a saga, if you are making saga, this how it exactly it should work.
