New Hope

Star Wars Episode IV New Hope (1977) Review

Cinematography by Gilbert Taylor
To Celebrate Star Wars Day and even possibly Star Wars Year i am going to review all the 6 Star Wars films starting from the Original Trilogy to the Prequel Trilogy. Now i am a huge Star Wars fan and i started being fell in love to the franchise 6 years ago, and today i will start it by reviewing the very first Star Wars film.

George Lucas Majestic idea of creating a universe that no could imagine to expand bigger than anything else becomes a Culture and a Tradition, Celebrating May The 4th is almost like a Christmas Day to any Star Wars fanatics out there. Star Wars for sure are one of the most valuable franchise of all time but before that of course everything came from a small beginning. George Lucas vision of creating Star Wars Universe came from a small science fiction fantasy of every young people ever wish. George Lucas Star Wars are for sure a fantasy come true.  He created Star Wars on the peak of his Enthusiasm while he was young and through that it creates a great connection to the film itself which develops a great product on the line.

Star Wars A New Hope evolves around a young hero named Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) where he learns the way of the force with his mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) and later  rescue Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) that led the Rebel Alliance who is planning to destroy the Galactic Empire's Deathstar. Together with Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), Luke and the Rebel Alliance joined forces to stop the atrocity that the Galactic Empire  sows all over the Galaxy. It also goes around on the search of Darth Vader and his Storm troopers to the missing droids CP30 (Anthony Daniels) and R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) who has the Deathstar plan which can help the Rebel Alliance to expose Enormous Galactic Empire Station.

Its a tale about Family, Friendship and Trust, from a simple state of Hero versus Villain, Star Wars message are farther than that. We see how this characters creates relationship to each other in the manner of which we are gonna be relate.

With the unique Space Adventure that the Star Wars bought, seeing different species and different planets, different culture and different belief we know there already that Star Wars have a created a big Universe, and by that Universe it cannot be accomplished without memorable Characters. Character is the main asset of the film that is unforgettable, even with the smallest set of characters in a small scale of details it manages to make them stick to our mind.

On that time casting fresh looking actors like Mark Hamill and Carrie fisher helps their performance to feel a bit more authentic to the world that George has been making. From the casting choice to the slate of the characters the film finished product looks fresh. The most memorable performances in the film is i guess Harrison Ford's  Han Solo, with a mixed of a space pirate and a western influence it was put together well, with witty and sarcastic type of attitude to his memorable lines, Han Solo's character is probably the best thing in Star Wars that influences more characters on the future.
Talking about memorable performances Alec Guinness performance as Luke Skywalker's mentor Obi-wan Kenobi Surely delivers an inevitable deliverance of his product skill, which we remembered as Obi-wan real character as now and then.

Mentioning performances of each character  we can't surely forgot the greatest villain ever created on the Cinema. Darth Vader, the character itself brought to life by not only one but three different people: James Earl Jones Done his voice, David Prowse Showcases his Physique and Sebatian Shaw becomes the face behind the mask of the memorable villain. The moment he walks inside the ambushed Tentative IV Space Cruiser ship where we are first introduce to the character slapped the most unforgettable moments in the history of the cinema. The impression and the look the Darth Vader with mask delivers a message that we are going to see a Villain that will become hardly to forget.

Visuals. Visuals are the main strength of the film, its innovative and even now it still wonderful good looking Visuals, that is because of practicality. CGI might be more convenient and advance but nothing beats the power of practicality of the sets and the effects that used. It has been Aged well than any other Special Effects that until now it still getting studied by many more generations to come.

Practical sets also helps the performances of every single cast members that are in the movie, because they felt the environment more, its more tangible and realistic, where the characters can maneuver their acting skills because they see whats happen around them in real time. The First shot the film where the Star Destroyer appears on the space is breath taking, no matter where you watch it or many time you've seen it, even you as the audience feel how enormous and big the ship and through that our mind sets to think that Galactic Empire is huge.

By the use of Practical Effects it also harness the showcasing of the each planet, ships and other stuffs that is on the film and by that it helps to gather the audience interest and make them felt like they belong to adventure in the galaxy. Practicality shows the effort of filmmakers who is behind of the creation of it. It becomes more Authentic that it make us think and make them feel like they are making a legitimate  Real World.

Star Wars had a huge contribution to the Cinema, not only by its memorable characters and great film making technique of George lucas but also Star Wars cannot be forgotten by the Sound it has. The Musics of Star Wars that was composed by John William is fantastic, in the way that it becomes not only as a film score but also one the main character of the film itself, that's how powerful it is.

Star Wars is a hueg thing. Personally in my life it is the most important thing happen to me, it inspires me in many different way, from inside to outside. The first film in the franchise itself is the most memorable than anything else.

Overall Star Wars Episode IV New Hope is a memorable, innovative and great Space Opera film. George Lucas vision is never been wasted. I wish I've seen it on 1977 so the intensity that i will be felt will become more surreal than now.

I give Star Wars Episode IV New Hope a solid 9.5/10.
Happy Star Wars Day to all the Star Wars Fans ! May the force be with you all.
