3rd World Hero

Bayaning 3rd Word (1999) Short Review

Cinematography by Ding Achacoso
It was back on the days where Cinema in the Philippines had a more broad and border less idea of making movies rather than sticking on what is trend, Mike De Leon along with Clodualdo Del Mundo jr. creates a very imaginative and unique approach doing an unorthodox way of making a biopic about one of the most iconic person in Philippines, Jose Rizal.  There are a lot of attempt making Jose Rizal that talks about his story, from Documentaries to actual feature films (most notable was Marilou Diaz-Abaya's 1999 Jose Rizal) and Mike De Leon's Third World Hero is one of the most different among the others.

To Celebrate Philippines National Day today June 12, i tried to find some interesting movies that has a connection to our history and i found 3rd World Hero which in fact the was one the first thing that came into mind. Yeah it wasn't really talking about the origin of the independence of the Philippines but it has touch to it, knowing by the fact that the story is about Jose Rizal's Retraction paper which a very sensitive and controversial topic to talk about, but that's what i like about this film is the fact that Mike De Leon boldly focused to that particular topic. Exploiting and so Exploring Rizal's life.

Bayaning 3rd World follows two film makers played by Ricky Davao and Chris Villanueva, who is in the verge of researching a good theme venturing the life of Dr. Jose Rizal (Joel Torre). They sooner discovered a good topic to write about Rizal and it was about his Retraction whether he retracted or not. During their writing production they had a chance to interview people that are connected to Rizal's life back during the Spanish Regime in the Philippines. Trying to Investigate the heroism of the National Hero through Rizal's retraction view to against Roman Catholic during that era. The two filmmakers had a opportunity to interview such people like the siblings of Rizal to Jose Rizal himself.

It's a contemporary movie, balancing the present and the past, by showing this two filmmakers literally getting a chance of interviewing people back in Spanish Regime in the Philippines from Modern day. Mostly we don't usually get some appeal from Historical movies because sometimes its just very common and  was done again again or sometimes it's just completely boring, however Third World Hero shows a seemingly appealing approach, there is ton of knowledge we could get on this film alone that doesn't look like a serious movie at all but however it broader our knowledge the topic that we mostly doesn't have interesting because the Retraction of Jose Rizal was more likely talk about in schools or you read it but this film put you to the interest.

The tone is one of the most lovable, thinking by the fact it doesn't feel like a movie, more like a Documentary slash Mockumentary vibe, balancing the dark and light humor in all side, balancing the etiquette of way of talking of Present to Century passed people add it with comedy that's alone a very interesting detail. The way the whole film was Covered in Black and White effect is just fantastic, that even though it is a modern type of film the color represents a respect that it has some elements that shows you are in a old Century era. I didn't seen the movie a HD glory, i believe there hasn't been some restoration about the film and the DVD was hardly exist but the cinematography was appreciable, just by looking at the position of the camera and it's one those thing that make this movie interesting, combining historical knowledge into a fun film.

I give Bayaning 3rd World a solid 9/10.
It's well filmed and written, i like the dialogue and the interview scenes. I'm not really into history but this film just put me into the interest and it was important as a Filipino. It's very unique and i recommend it to be watched by anyone.
