It Follows

It Follows (2015) Review

Cinematography by Mike Gioulakis
I wasn't big fan of Horror movie Genre in Films , and by that i am one of those people who carefully chooses what movie to watch, but as a movie buff it's inevitable to always choose what you want and rely to others opinion before seeing a particular horror movie, the more you get into films that more you are naturally see  movies because you love watching it no matter what is going to be the outcome, and that will be talked about after you watch a movie. The last horror movie I've seen was Insidious 2 and The Babadook and now i given my chance another horror film and that is It Follows.

It Follows is some of sort of movie that i didn't anticipated to see, i didn't even saw any of the trailer but the things i heard about this are so mixed, some says don't watch  it's waste of time, some says you go watch because its good. I am very sensitive about this fact because Horror movies are the things that i have to be convince by a word before actually seeing them, but what really pushes me to see It Follows is my curiosity on why this movie does get some big attention.

The movie is about this Curse, a metaphorical approach to a Sexual Transmitted Disease, which will going to be passed to another person by having a Sexual Intercourse. It follows a teen-age girl named Jay Height (Maika Monroe) who are dating a man Hugh (Jake Weary) that posses the disease that was also passed to him. While Jay is having this kind of emotional attractiveness to Hugh, they've gone into Sexual situation where hugh eventually passed the disease to Jay. The Curse causes the victims to see ghosts that represent either Strangers or people that the victim knows who follows them until they get killed.

David Robert Mitchell does a different take in "It Follows" for today's horror movie style, and that is putting a message or theme on it that you don't usually see in a horror film. The movie takes a respectful metaphor on the inevitability of consequences on Teen-Age Sex or let's say Unprotected Sex Intercourse, that is actually one of the major issue of our society nowadays, and that what's makes this movie so fascinating by the fact it has a theme to really tell that really affects our modern society. It's just a pulchritude of Messages and Visual metaphors, that's why this movie really works.

Story wise the movie wasn't that strong on telling the story. It wasn't bad or It wasn't really good, it's a very minimalist and straight forward but the story of this movie wasn't really told rather it was visualize and that's the main strength of this movie is visual story which really works in a horror movie, because horror movies on my own perspective must rely on showcasing the atmosphere and the visuals of the movie to really put the tension intact till the end of the film, and this movie knows to keep it's tension stay up although it doesn't really have a strength of scaring you much the tension which is the tone was keeping up was enough to keep your chills about this movie.

I think the Cast did great job on this movie, they felt authentic at so many times and i think it's important for this kind movie, because they are teenager and they have to face this kind of things. However the downfall of their characters is the story itself when told. You know a generic horror movie sometimes includes dumb characters that does dumb things that it ended up being unrealistic to situation and "It Follows" had those kinds of character moments which makes the movie felt generic but not in a bad way but i think it's inevitable but the theme of the movie is enough to tell this not just generic slasher teen horror film.

The movie is just visually enthralling, it was really well directed film. I love the Camera movements and the Cinematography on how it helps to lift up the tension of the movie. It's all about fine use of technicalities, the cinematography is one of the best thing on this movie, on those small visual messages and tiny details you barely see that if you notice you will going to have an extra pump on the story, because it's slow pace movie i'ts not a fast pace horror, that things just happen eventually instead "It Follows" was very careful, and it uses visual techniques to keep the slow tone. Its about this ghost who keep following this girl and it's just walking toward so it has to rely on it's slowness, and they use the visuals to build those things.

Music is literally the key of the movie next to visuals. A horror movie usually use music or sounds to make the tone of the film help the tension and scare tactics, but what makes the music on this movie so special is that it has a strong connection or a relation with the visuals and that is just fantastic. The Retro 80's style of sounds that was used this movie are just amazing, there's no other words to express what i felt about it. It feels like 80's Horror film, and when this ghost showed up towards the camera there is no stopping. the camera keeps on it, with this sound the background the make you felt thrill. The Heavy bass are frantic which is there to movie the whole time. Great Visuals plus Sounds equals great tension, if this movie wasn't scary enough at least suspenseful.

Overall It Follows is great horror movie that i can recommend to anyone even though expect that it wasn't really for general audience by the fact that i received some mixed emotions about it, i still think that it is supposed for not only a lesson for the wrongs that our youth do today but also it's has a pretty much unique horror story.

I Give  It Follows a solid 9/10.
It's a late 80's horror movie that was released in 2015, Personally it's undeniably one of the best horror movie I've seen.

It Follows was directed by David Robert Mitchell, Starring Maika Monroe, Kei Gilchrist, Jake Weary, Daniel Zovatto and Olivia Luccardi.
