Focus

Focus (2015) Review

Cinematography by Xavier Perez Grobet
It's Fun and It feels good until is not anymore and it confuses you. It seems like those aspects are always present to some of Will Smith's movies like I am Legend and Hancock but what charming about his films is that they take some different approach that gives a broad idea compare to any movies that tries to be different. I am always been small fan of Glenn Ficarra and John Requa and their films just feels so good even if they are weak at some point and Focus is one those once again but it's more twisted, It's it build some chemistry between Ficarra, Reuqa  and Will Smith. So i'm asking: Does Will Smith has a big contribution to all films he was in in terms of script  ? That's what i don't know.

You'll get point if you already seen the movie. Focus is a movie that just when you thought you are In and then later you're gonna be asking if you are still In and it leaves to find it out by yourself, it's a combination of good and bad things about this movie, is not like deep premise that confuse you but it will confuse you anyway, what i mean is the movie was like trying "Con" you about the plot. But let's not get a little bit more deeper just like what this movie is trying to, because it's not going work. You get me ?

So Focus is about a veteran Con Artist Nicky (Will Smith) met a woman named Jess (Margot Robbie) who was also a novice Con Artist. Nicky went to take Jess by training her to be a better thief. Saying Tricks and Trades about the business until they romantically got attached to each other. Sooner Nick decided to end his relationship by Jess, and years after Nick decided to quit the business he came back while working with Garriga (Rodrigo Sontoro) in Buenos Aires and unexpectedly Jess once again, and the twist and turns began to shred.

Will Smith once again prove that he is a versatile actor, from being a Superhero to being Lone Survivor now a Con artist, he just did great and i love the chemistry between Him and Margot Robbie who was also great on her performance on this film. The movie itself had a unique approach, the inconsistent maintenance to the Three Act Story Structure are well executed however, there's some things inside those structure are not well constructed ironically, that affects the main characters, without keeping their character tones consistent which important to a movie that plans twist to their characters although the chemistry between Will and Margot are just so likable it made their tone Unnoticeable.

One of the very good aspect of Focus was it is beautifully shot film and it cannot be more enthralling than showcasing cities at night with wide shot, that build movie's tone not the characters. Those shots and a great use of sounds helps to put you into the world of it, making it not boring from start to end. Plot wise, there's some ups and down about the premise of this movie. Acts really help to determine strength of the plot which sometimes twisted because what i said before it doesn't follow the rule of three act story. The first act the movie is what title says and after that it doesn't really make strong build up. I'd say if they still keep the first act's establishment and made slow to complete the whole, i think this film will work more than it was.

Surprisingly one of the weakest part of the film was the romantic moments, although yes there's some good chemistry to the actors and combine with good performance, the romance brought down the real essence of the potential plot of the film. Another thing that made the movie weak at some point is the twist and turns that it tries to make, they messed it up, Sometimes the twist was already good but then they are gonna add another twist which makes this film more badly subtle. The movie tries itself hardly even though the plot really makes curious on what's next is going to happen, it just felt like it's having an Identity crisis because of twist by twist approach.

Overall Focus is a film that you will find enthralling but however it confuses you not because it has a deep premise but the writing and twist doesn't know where to be putted their selves into the movie. I just felt like there's a small touch that could completely this movie good but it wasn't there, yet you'll still find it entertaining.

I give Focus a solid 7.0/10
It has strong cast, with great chemistry but the writing just don't do really well, and the twist are bit disappoint, yet still recommend it if you love movies that talks about Con Artist.

Focus is directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, Starring Margo Robbie,Will Smith, Rodrigo Santoro, Adrian Martinez B.D Wong and More...
